Ambition Southend – a skills strategy tailored to local needs

Client: Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

Year: 2018

Working with Karl Dalgleish from Kada Research, My Local Economy developed a skills strategy for Southend-on-Sea that was tailored towards its local economy, existing skills profile, and future ambition and developments.

Southend-on-Sea was an interesting locality. With high levels of commuting, a vibrant visitor economy, a number of under-performing schools, a major airport business park development, and a £400m regeneration programme that was about to start – there were many factors and dynamics to consider.

Coupled with that, we found a very articulate and committed group of stakeholders in the public and private sector who were determined to improve education, skills and jobs outcomes. These stakeholders helped to shape the strategy and also to keep it relevant to local needs. The strategy was also backed by a robust evidence base and analytical report written in a clear and engaging style.

The client, Southend-on-Sea Borough Council were very pleased, in the end, and we presented the initial research and final strategy to two local council committees.

You can view the final strategy on the council website.
