Local leaders often say they can’t afford to invest in economic development.

𝘉𝘶𝘵 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭 – 𝘪𝘵’𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴.

𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗸’𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹: 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗢𝗨𝗥 𝗹𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗯𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Consider what “doing nothing” actually means:

  • You never discover which sectors could thrive in your area
  • You don’t learn what skills gaps are holding back growth
  • You miss identifying why businesses struggle or leave
  • You can’t understand what prevents residents from accessing jobs
  • You don’t keep in touch with what sectors or markets are growing and declining and HOW this is going to affect your local economy

Economic disparities between regions don’t emerge overnight. They compound when communities fail to engage in active economic development – when they don’t gather intelligence, don’t support adaptation, don’t experiment with solutions.

Here’s what successful places DO differently:

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀: What are our unique assets? Which sectors are growing or declining? Why do businesses locate here or leave?

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: They try business support programmes, test innovation partnerships, pilot skills initiatives – and learn from results.

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁: When one industry or major employer declines – they plan transitions, retrain workers, and attract new sectors.

Even basic steps create discovery opportunities:

→ Analyse which businesses are growing and why

→ Survey employers about skills needs and barriers

→ Map your sector strengths and emerging opportunities

→ Test small interventions and measure results

Every initiative – successful or not – teaches you something about your local economy. That knowledge compounds. Over time, you build genuine understanding of what works in your specific context.

Without this discovery process, you’re flying blind.

What’s your locality discovering about its economic future?
